Email sent at 9:54 a.m. (CST) today to my spiritual director. I like to give her a heads-up a day or two ahead of our monthly sessions, and I’ve been posting them to my spiritual journal blog as a reminder to myself. Since I sent the email, Debi has been released from St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Sr. ______ —
Debi’s in the hospital now, but we think she’ll be released later today. So I’m planning to keep our appointment for 2:30 p.m. Monday. If something comes up, I’ll let you know through the main number at the Dominican motherhouse.
The last few weeks have been quite a rodeo, and we’ll have quite a bit to talk about!
I’m pretty sure Debi has filled you in on our adventures last month with that GI bug that was going around, and with our cats — they’ve been diagnosed with diabetes and the early signs of kidney failure. If not, the second of the linked journals should tell you enough.
And last week, Debi was taken by ambulance to St. John’s for treatment of what turned out to be a bleeding ulcer in her stomach lining and the consequent loss of blood. It was pretty frightening. She was in the ICU for two days, and is now in a private room. Seems to be responding to treatment, though, and she may get released as early as today.
All of which has given me a new perspective on the prayer issues I’d been wrestling with!
Like I said, we’ll have a lot to talk about.
I’m sending two links. The first one is very disjointed, but it has some verbatim quotes on the nature of God, the Holy Trinity, faith, trust and and other issues I’ve wrestled with for a long time. I think I’ve made kind of a breakthrough — no doubt because the pressure of confronting illness, first with the cats in our care and now with Debi.
I’m a little rushed for time this morning, but my headlines tend to be fairly descriptive, so I’ll just copy the links and headlines below:
— https://hemlandssanger.wordpress.com/2019/03/01/faith-hope-trust/ Preliminary notes on faith, hope and trust in the ER, with a little help from a college textbook and a Swedish-English dictionary
— https://hemlandssanger.wordpress.com/2019/02/17/prayer-foxholes-cats/ Of the power of prayer, atheists in foxholes, Paschal’s wager and aging cats
One last thing I ought to mention. When I was filling out a prayer request this morning on the Springfield Dominicans’ website — thanksgiving for Debi’s healing and prayer for continued healing — I noticed a link to the Examen. I’m increasingly convinced I don’t notice things like that by accident, and I took it as a reminder that I talked a good game several months ago about praying the Examen but never followed through on it. Might be worth exploring?
See you tomorrow at 2:30.
